Welcome to the Department of English at NUI Maynooth. English at Maynooth provides an exciting and rewarding experience: with a unique concentration of internationally recognised scholars and dedicated educators, our department offers the opportunity to study English literature from the Renaissance to the present, and has notable expertise in Irish literature and postcolonial studies. In 2008, the English Department launched a new undergraduate BA in English (Course code MH114), which allows students with a passion for the subject to concentrate on English in their primary degree, working in small-group seminars. This degree programme reflects the changing, and global, nature of English-language literature while providing students with a thorough grounding in established traditions. The degree also affords the opportunity of studying creative writing. The new Higher Diploma in English programme is designed for applicants who already hold a BA or comparable degree, and who wish to add English to their list of qualifications. For postgraduate students, the Department offers three taught Masters’ Degrees – an MA in Gender and Sexuality in Writing and Culture (new for September 2013), an MA in Irish Literature and Culture, and an MA in Postcolonial and World Literatures. The School of English, Media and Theatre Studies also offers Ireland’s only MA in Dramatherapy and the MA Theatre, a unique one-year programme jointly delivered by the Gaiety School of Acting - the National Theatre School of Ireland. We also offer MLitt and PhD research degrees, and particularly welcome applications from prospective doctoral research students wishing to earn a PhD in English. The Department also has a strong record of hosting postdoctoral researchers.
